10 things you should know before visiting Maldives
- Visa: Free tourist visa upon entry for all nationality for stay up to 30 days
- Currency: USD and Maldivian Dollars (1USD = 15 MRF)
- Banks: Banks and ATM can be easily found along the main jetty
- Transportation: A ferry ride from the airport to Male (Capital of Maldives) is approximately 15mins and cost about 1USD or 10MRF. Taxi charge a flat rate of 20MRF(without luggage) and 25MRF(with luggage) in Male
- Shopping: Most shops operate from 9am-11pm with breaks in between from Saturday to Thursday. Whereas on Friday, operating hours are normally from 2pm-11pm
- Health: Hospitals, clinics, dentals and pharmacies are easily found throughout Male
- Accommodation: There are plenty of hotels and resorts in Maldives but its normally packed during peak season (September - April) So booked early to avoid disappointment.
- Religion: Maldives is a muslim country. Therefore, pork and alcohol are not available in Male and any of the island where locals inhabit. However, alcohol are to be found on safari boats and resorts island
- Water: Do not drink water of the tap before boiling. All restaurant in Maldives serve bottled water
- Tipping is not a custom in Maldives. Most restaurant has include a 10% service charge to the bill.
